The agreement was signed in Vienna on Monday.
– We share a common interest with our American colleagues in exchanging information and collaborating on nuclear safety. Cross-border cooperation is important to strengthen nuclear safety internationally, but also here at home, says Per Strand, Director of DSA.
According to the agreement, DSA and the NRC can exchange information on regulation and supervision related to the safety of nuclear facilities and radioactive materials, emergency strategies, decommissioning of nuclear facilities, and the handling of radioactive waste. The agreement also stipulates that DSA and NRC will notify each other promptly of significant incidents and technical issues that may be of interest to the other party. Additionally, it provides a basis for cooperation to enhance international nuclear safety, especially in Ukraine.
DSA is the highest nuclear safety authority in Norway and is the recommending authority for licensing nuclear facilities. DSA also works to increase international nuclear safety and prevent the spread of radioactive materials.
– International cooperation is an important part of our activities, and we have had extensive bilateral project cooperation with other countries for several years. The US is one of several countries we cooperate with on nuclear safety, says Strand.
