Industry and research

'FACTS'

  • Ionising radiation is very penetrating and is also easy to detect. The radiation therefore has many industrial applications, such as process control, well logging, material testing and tracer analysis.

  • Industrial and research use of radiation is very varied, and include sealed radioactive sources, open radioactive sources, and a variety of X-ray machines from small handheld devices to large closed cabinets.

  • Industrial radiography is an important method of quality assurance of materials, machine parts and structures.

  • In research, open radioactive sources are used, among other things, as tracers to analyse chemical and physiological processes.
